Welcome to The McHenry County Gay Straight Alliance

This small group started out as an idea to get students, gay and straight alike, to come and meet for a place to talk, in a counselor’s office at Cary-Grove High School. It began as more of a group for people to come to talk about their issues with their families and friends accepting them and since then it’s moved to a group with a plan.

With that change in direction came the idea of moving out to other schools in the district to make an impact and students across the county. With that motive in hand, we moved to the Panera. At Panera we came up with a regular meeting and agendas, which included our direction as a group. This movement out of the basement of Cary-Grove helped the group become larger and since Panera we’ve had to move from they’re to AMCORE Bank as our meeting place. And since these different changes in scenery are group has grown substantially in numbers and added on motives.

We’ve created T-shirts, with different sayings displaying anti-homophobic messages on them. Which we got a large number of students and staff to wear, and proud to say, we sold out of them rather quickly. So far we have done more then we imagined to begin with and with the help of others coming to the meetings and assisting our cause we hope to keep moving forward.

Our relatively young group has accomplished a lot since we started. The MCGSA will go as far, and accomplish as much as our members put towards it, and with our rising numbers, and awareness from the community, the future outlook is good.
