We've recieved our second shipment of shirts

If you would like to purchase a shirt, the cost is 8 dollars. If you go to Cary Grove High School, see Mike Lago to buy your shirt. If you don't know Mike or go to Cary Grove, email holter@msgsa.net and we will get you
a shirt
We are having our next t-shirt day Wednesday, May 11, 2005. On April 8th, the last day we wore the shirts, but didn't have anything explaining who we were, what we were doing, or why. That confused some people because they wanted to know more, but couldn't really get the
answers to their questions. We took that into consideration, and in response, have decided to hold another t-shirt day, this time, however, we will be passing out cards with answers to some of those questions in order to clear up some of the confusion. Please grab a shirt and help support the GSA by wearing your shirt on Wednesday, May 11th.

In order to make this site more effective, and interactive, a web forum or message board has been added. This will provide as a great tool for anyone who wants to keep in contact with other members of the GSA. If you have any questions, want to submit some news of your own, or just feel like talking to some other members, then become a board member and start posting!

Today on April 13, also the Nation Day Of Silence, in the "Being Heard" section of Cary Grove High School's newspaper "The Echo" Michael Lago's article about the used of the word gay was read by nearly 1,850 students and over 100 teachers. In the article Mike also, and possibly more inportantly, revealed to the school that he is gay.
"I will not have my sexuality slandered because others are incapable of forming logical statements or choosing words more appropriate to the situation when there are fustrated with their current dillemma" said Mike.
The article was of course met with opposition by the higher-ups at Cary Grove. Excuses like "fear of safety" and "questionable content" were just some of the hurdles that Mike faced as he tried to get the article submitted. Mike knew that a riot wasn't going to insue, or that people would hold anti-gay rallys infront of the school, so he pushed on and fought for the article. He eventually met up with the District 155 Superintendant about the article, who passed down the ok to Susan Popp, the school principal.
The importance of this article is not only that there are very few openly homosexual students at Cary Grove, but that before this article came out, only a handfull of people knew of Mike's sexuality. In every hall and classroom the following period, there was talk about the article. Most people we're just giving their opinon about the article to there friends and peers. Whether the opinons were positive or negative, it got people aware and talking about the subject of homosexuality and the use of the word gay. The true significance of the artcle will be seen in the coming weeks as the school year comes to a close. However, one this is for sure, Mike's article is definatly a giant step towards our goal for promoting tolerance throughout our community.
A pdf copy of the newpaper and article will be made available soon.

The Day of Silence, a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) in collaboration with the United States Student Association (USSA), is a student-led day of action where those who support making anti-LGBT bias unacceptable in schools take a day-long vow of silence to recognize and silencing -- experienced by LGBT students and their allies.
